'Strange Songs in the Dark' was followed by 'Children of Desire', the band’s biggest breakaway from their past. After suffering many hangovers tied to drunken, sweaty nights at the local goth club, Cox bought a second-hand Boss Dr. Rhythm drum machine at his favorite pawn shop and immediately went to work on the next album. This electronic box shaped the sound of everything on this collection, propelling the boys spaceward from their stunted rock brains. Things opened up. Concept superseded song. Groove and swing found their way in, but not before being shotgunned and spun around a bit. The group’s prior experiments had, by this point, exploded. This collection is comprised of demos and two unreleased songs from this fertile time. Many come from a CD-R entitled 'Angels In The Station' that was sold at the merch table on the band’s first NA tour. In addition to stretching their songs (often beyond the 10-minute mark) and exploring texture as subject, the lyrical stance strengthened as well. These songs are full of reflections about the ambiguity of loss, love, friendship, sex, dreams, nightmares, death and the overall numb & glorious experience of life itself. The final track, “Roser Park”, is the original version of 'Children of Desire’s closer - here presented complete in its incomplete form.

Wow, I'm blown away. This is one of Spiritualized's best albums in my opinion and I didn't expect that. Pierce deserves all the praise he gets, he truly is a modern rock n roll legend. I haven't been keeping up with them in recent years but clearly should have. ZWT100

Father John Misty is so good to listen to when I want to relax. My cat used to seem to like the music too, and we would both chill and listen to the FJM vinyls I own. This album on bandcamp was a nice FJM treat. Michelle May
