about

The cornerstone of this collection shares its title with the tour cassette that makes up the majority of its meat: 'Gone Are The Silk Gardens Of Youth'. This tape is a collage of b-sides, alternate versions and demo recordings of songs from the first official Merchandise album, 'Strange Songs in the Dark'. Considered by some fans as a lost LP in its own right, '...Silk Gardens' marks the beginning of the group’s foray into samples, electronics, and further un-punk junk. You can hear the same creative agents from those early tapes if you listen close enough, but the project had obviously morphed into something else by this point. This is post-punk haphazardly dropped into a gravity bong and left outside under a scorching Florida sun to dry and warp.

Recorded between the House Ov Infinity in Tampa Bay and Vassalotti’s temporary Atlanta residence on a mix of cassette tapes, half-broken computers, and dictaphones, '...Silk Gardens' manages to maintain a very personal and organic feel despite the physical and temporal distance between the two creators. Many moments on this release reference the band itself - sampling “It’s a Man’s World” from the first demo to make “Everyman”. The dubbing, the referencing, the self-referencing in a feedback loop… The band starts to recognize its own reflection and decides to let the shadow drive.

Also included in this collection is a cover of the Silver Jews classic “Dallas”, originally released as a limited edition of 40 copies. The final track, “I Get Lost” (featured on 'Strange Songs in the Dark' in re-recorded form), is the very first Merchandise demo to use loops or electronics.
