about

From the depths of the mid-to-late aughts - a truly confusing era for music outside of an underground context… The very first iteration of Merchandise: thee good ol’ power trio version. Carson Cox, David Vassalotti, and Pat Brady wield guitar, drums, and bass (respectively) on these rarities. Both tapes were recorded in a homemade oversized drum-room in Mama’s garage off of Habana and Hillsborough Ave in working class West Tampa with only the most spare and choppy 2007/08 digital equipment.

This original demo was the first sentence of a novel. You can hear Punk’s growing pains in the seesaw of melody and dissonance on these early tracks. The transition from JNCO’s to Levi’s was well underway… These tracks expand and contract, taking cues from bands like Mission of Burma, Hüsker Dü, and the Replacements while introducing something very isolated, very Floridian, into the equation. Originally released as a CD-R and distributed primarily on Cult Ritual’s second NA tour, it was immediately thrown in the trash upon the discovery that it was not, in fact, hardcore (or even black metal). It was rereleased shortly afterwards as a cassette on Drugged Conscience.

'Terminal Jagger Jane’s Addiction Boxset' saw the band refining the pop-craft of that first demo while starting to embrace more of that ‘out’-ness they seem so annoyingly fond of. This was released to no fanfare and the band subsequently went on hiatus while the members tried (and failed) to figure out their lives.
